Is Jev free?
Is Jev free? The honest answer, as of 2026-09-21, is no — not as a documented self-serve free product. Jev is TypeSafe’s System One decision model. TypeSafe opened early access on 15 September 2026 and is bringing people off a waitlist. Once you have a credential, input tokens are billed at the public list price. Output tokens are free on the models page.
This FAQ-style page is for people who typed “is jev free” and need a dated answer without invented credits. The pricing hub is Jev pricing. Access path: how to get access.
What “free” could mean (and what docs actually say)
Three different questions get collapsed into one search:
- Is there a $0 product / free tier? The public models page we used does not describe a self-serve free tier, trial credits, or starter quota. We will not invent one.
- Are output tokens free? Yes, as a vendor claim on that models page: charged per input token; output tokens are free. The launch post says “too cheap to meter.”
- Can I try it without a TypeSafe account? Some third-party doors (Vercel AI Gateway, OpenRouter, Cloudflare Workers AI) document their own accounts and, sometimes, their own promotional credits. Those credits expire on that vendor’s terms. They are not a TypeSafe free tier. 2026-09-21: Vercel’s TypeSafe provider table marks
typesafe-ai/jevFree/Free; the model card still prints $0.042/1M. A rival note (19 September) cited a promo through 25 September 2026. Check the dashboard — Jev on Vercel.
“Pro” on jev.pro is not a paid TypeSafe SKU. It means production-minded craft — about this guide.
Early access is not a free tier
The launch post (15 September 2026) says TypeSafe is “opening early access and bringing developers off the waitlist as quickly as we can.” Waitlist / invite is an access control, not a price of $0. After a console invite, keys live in console.typesafe.ai. This site cannot expedite the queue and does not issue keys.
Higher limits: TypeSafe says contact [email protected] for custom and enterprise plans. That is a sales conversation, not a published free allowance.
What you still pay
At first-party list price (models page, 2026-09-21):
- $0.042 per million input tokens ($42 / billion)
- Output: $0 on the card
- Rate limits (separate from price; vendor; can change): 250,000 tokens/second and 1,200 RPM — rate limits
A short triage call is often a fraction of a cent. That can feel free in a prototype and still be a bill at volume. Sketch the month on cost planning before you call it “free enough.”
Third-party “free” you might hear
Gateway and marketplace free tiers are those companies’ promotions. Independent testers have reported that Vercel’s free tier is a poor fit for batch work (throttling, card on file). Treat that as their measurement, not a TypeSafe SLA. Always read the door’s invoice.
If a social post says “Jev is free right now,” ask: free output, free waitlist slot, or free input? Only the first is on the models page.
FAQ
Is Jev free for hobby use?
Not as a documented $0 hobby SKU. Hobby volume at $0.042 / MTok is often tiny in dollars — that is cheap, not free. Confirm the models page.
Does early access include credits?
TypeSafe’s public models page did not list credits in the snapshot we used. Do not assume a welcome grant.
Are output tokens really free?
Vendor claim on the models page and launch post, dated here 2026-09-21. Log usage.output_tokens. Do not assume the policy is permanent.
Can jev.pro give me a free key?
No.
What this page does not claim
- No invented free tier, coupon, or credit balance.
- No promise that a gateway promo equals TypeSafe’s list price.
- No official TypeSafe billing support.
